50 Wise Lessons from the Book of Proverbs
I absolutely love the book of Proverbs (so much so that I wrote a Proverbs Study Guide).
I’ve loved Proverbs for as long as I can remember. I’m not really sure why, or where it started.
The book of Proverbs is like a treasure chest, full of the greatest treasure to be found on earth.
The instructions found in the book of Proverbs are kind of like a recipe. If we follow the recipe, it usually turns out the way the recipe says it will.
The wisdom of God is similar, but even more dependable than a recipe.
If we follow His instructions for life, we can be assured that the outcome will be successful. We can avoid so many painful mistakes in life by receiving His wisdom found in the book of Proverbs.
When the Lord gives instructions, it’s not because He’s a control freak who wants to dictate how we behave.
In fact, He’s exactly the opposite. He absolutely refuses to control you in any way and insists that you live in freedom.
His instructions are kind of like an “insider tip”. He knows the way the universe works because He’s the One that set it up that way.
He’s the One who knows what will bring success and happiness into your life, and He wants you to have it.
I’ve put together 50 wise lessons that I’ve learned from the books of Proverbs.
Meditate on them, print them out, speak them out loud, look them up in other translations. These scriptures will help you avoid the pitfalls of life and walk in success.

or put your hope in stealing.

don’t make it the center of your life. God has spoken plainly,
and I have heard it many times:
Power, O God, belongs to you; Psalm 62:10-11 NLT
He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver;
Nor he who loves abundance, with increase.
This also is vanity. When goods increase,
They increase who eat them;
So what profit have the owners
Except to see them with their eyes? The sleep of a laboring man is sweet,
Whether he eats little or much;
But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep. Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 NKJV

12. Never Co-Sign On a Loan
My son, if you become surety for your friend,
If you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,
You are snared by the words of your mouth;
You are taken by the words of your mouth.
So do this, my son, and deliver yourself;
For you have come into the hand of your friend:
Go and humble yourself;
Plead with your friend.
Give no sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids.
Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
And like a bird from the hand of the fowler. Proverbs 6:1-5 NKJV

Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty;

Lazy people sleep a lot.
Idle people will go hungry. Proverbs 19:15 ICB

for they are on their way to poverty,
and too much sleep clothes them in rags. Proverbs 23:19-21 NLT
The lazy person says, “There’s a lion in the road.
There’s a lion in the streets!” The lazy person is like a door that turns back and forth on its hinges.

But he’s too tired to lift the food to his mouth. The lazy person thinks he is wiser
than seven people who give sensible answers. Proverbs 26:13-16 ICB
A lazy person will end up poor.
But a hard worker will become rich.
A son who gathers crops when they are ready is wise.

And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned. Psalm 34:21-22 NKJV

He saves them from the wicked
because they trust in him for protection. Psalm 37:39-40 ICB

The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.
He will not be afraid of evil tidings;
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Psalm 112:5-7 NKJV
I trust in the Lord for protection.
So why do you say to me,
“Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety!
The wicked are stringing their bows
and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings.
They shoot from the shadows
at those whose hearts are right.
The foundations of law and order have collapsed.
What can the righteous do?” But the Lord is in his holy Temple;
the Lord still rules from heaven.
He watches everyone closely,
examining every person on earth. Psalm 11:1-4 NLT
He is my strength, my shield from every danger. I trusted in him, and he helped me. Joy rises in my heart until I burst out in songs of praise to him. Psalm 28:7-9 TLB
God is our refuge and strength,

Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah Psalm 46: 1-3 NKJV
Oh, how great is your goodness to those who publicly declare that you will rescue them. For you have stored up great blessings for those who trust and reverence you. Hide your loved ones in the shelter of your presence, safe beneath your hand, safe from all conspiring men. Psalm 31:19-20 TLB

There is no need to fear when times of trouble come, even though surrounded by enemies! Psalm 49:5 TLB

he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles,
but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.
For the Lord protects the bones of the righteous;
not one of them is broken! Psalm 34:18-20 NLT
15. Beware of the Consequences of Adultery
Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,
Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.
For by means of a harlot
A man is reduced to a crust of bread;
And an adulteress will prey upon his precious life.
Can a man take fire to his bosom,
And his clothes not be burned? Proverbs 6:25-27, 29 NKJV

for he destroys himself.
He will be wounded and disgraced.
His shame will never be erased. Proverbs 6:32-3 NLT
Don’t let your desires get out of hand; don’t let yourself think about her. Don’t go near her; stay away from where she walks, lest she tempt you and seduce you. For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey,
and her mouth is smoother than oil.
But in the end she is as bitter as poison,
as dangerous as a double-edged sword.
Her feet go down to death;
her steps lead straight to the grave. Proverbs 5:3-5 NLT
Run from her! Don’t go near her house, lest you fall to her temptation and lose your honor, and give the remainder of your life to the cruel and merciless; lest strangers obtain your wealth, and you become a slave of foreigners. Lest afterwards you groan in anguish and in shame when syphilis consumes your body, 12 and you say, “Oh, if only I had listened! If only I had not demanded my own way! Oh, why wouldn’t I take advice? Why was I so stupid? Proverbs 5:8-13 TLB
For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman,
And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?
For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,
And He ponders all his paths.
His own iniquities entrap the wicked man,
And he is caught in the cords of his sin.
He shall die for lack of instruction,
And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. Prov 5:20-23 NKJV
16. Don’t Drink Too Much Alcohol
Do not look on the wine when it is red,
When it sparkles in the cup,
When it swirls around smoothly;
At the last it bites like a serpent,
And stings like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange things,
And your heart will utter perverse things.
Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea,
Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying:
“They have struck me, but I was not hurt;
They have beaten me, but I did not feel it.
When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?” Proverbs 23:31-35 NKJV

People curse those who hoard their grain,
but they bless the one who sells in time of need. Proverbs 11:26 NLT
I have been young and now I am old. And in all my years I have never seen the Lord forsake a man who loves him; nor have I seen the children of the godly go hungry. Instead, the godly are able to be generous with their gifts and loans to others, and their children are a blessing. Psalm 37:25-26 TLB

bridle your appetite. Proverbs 23:1-3 MSG
Have you found honey?
Eat only as much as you need,
Lest you be filled with it and vomit. Proverbs 25:16 NKJV

So do not be dismayed when evil men grow rich and build their lovely homes. For when they die, they carry nothing with them! Their honors will not follow them. Keep sound wisdom and discretion;
So they will be life to your soul
And grace to your neck.
Then you will walk safely in your way,
And your foot will not stumble.
When you lie down, you will not be afraid;

The wise man looks ahead. The fool attempts to fool himself and won’t face facts. Proverbs 14:8 TLB
There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver. Money is put into risky investments that turn sour, and everything is lost. In the end, there is nothing left to pass on to one’s children. We all come to the end of our lives as naked and empty-handed as on the day we were born. We can’t take our riches with us. And this, too, is a very serious problem. People leave this world no better off than when they came. All their hard work is for nothing—like working for the wind. Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23 NKJV
And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.” Mark 7:20-23 NKJV

A fool’s lips enter into contention,
And his mouth calls for blows.
A fool’s mouth is his destruction,
And his lips are the snare of his soul. Proverbs 18:6-7 TLB
43. Learn to Be Content
Better is a little with righteousness,
Than vast revenues without justice. Proverbs 16:8 NKJV
But as for me, my contentment is not in wealth but in seeing you and knowing all is well between us. And when I awake in heaven, I will be fully satisfied, for I will see you face-to-face. Psalm 17:15 TLB
And, of course, it is very good if a man has received wealth from the Lord and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and to accept your lot in life—that is indeed a gift from God. The person who does that will not need to look back with sorrow on his past, for God gives him joy. Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 TLB
Though a man lives a thousand years twice over but doesn’t find contentment—well, what’s the use? Ecclesiastes 6:6 TLB

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him;
Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
Do not fret—it only causes harm. For evildoers shall be cut off;
But those who wait on the Lord,
They shall inherit the earth. Psalm 37:7-9 NKJV
The end of a thing is better than its beginning;
The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. Ecclesiastes 7:8 NKJV
rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; Romans 12:12 NKJV
And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 2 Timothy 2:24 NKJV
45. Control Your Tongue
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21 NKJV
A fool’s mouth is his destruction,
And his lips are the snare of his soul. Proverbs 18:7 NKJV
The hypocrite with his mouth destroys his neighbor,
But through knowledge the righteous will be delivered. Proverbs 11:9 NKJV

And one who sows discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16-19 NKJV
Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord,
But those who deal truthfully are His delight. Proverbs 12:22 NKJV
You who love the Lord, hate evil!
He preserves the souls of His saints;
He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. Psalm 97:10 NKJV
47. Don’t Seek Revenge or Be Glad When Your Enemies Suffer
He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker;
He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished. Proverbs 17:5 NKJV
If you repay evil for good, a curse is upon your home. Proverbs 17:13 TLB
Do not say, “I will recompense evil”;
Wait for the Lord, and He will save you. Proverbs 20:22 NKJV

And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; Proverbs 24:17 NKJV
Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. Romans 12:17 NKJV
Do not say, “I will do to him just as he has done to me;
I will render to the man according to his work.” Proverbs 24:29 KJV

Since any fool can start a quarrel. Proverbs 20:3 NKJV
