The Holy Spirit Will Never Leave You: How You Can Be Sure
Will the Holy Spirit leave a believer? Does the Holy Spirit come and go? What if I sin? What if I got to places I shouldn’t go? Will the Holy Spirit be taken away from me?
These are important questions and God always has answers for you. Never believe the lie that God is mysterious and won’t give you the answers you seek. He wants to be known and is passionate about giving you the answers you need.
The Holy Spirit will never leave you. If you are a new creation in Christ, the Holy Spirit has come to live with you permanently. You have become the temple of the Holy Spirit, and He will be with you forever. The Holy Spirit is a gift from God Who will never, ever leave you.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—John 14:16
Let’s look more at what the Bible says about this. How can we be so sure that the Holy Spirit won’t leave us? Didn’t David pray that God would not take the Holy Spirit from him? Yes he did, but David was not a new creation under the New Covenant.
What is the Temple of the Holy Spirit?
When Jesus was crucified and rose again, He provided His perfect righteousness as a gift for all who believe. When you received salvation, your spirit came alive unto God, and was created in perfect righteousness and holiness. You became a new creation that looks just like Jesus.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 2 Corinthians 5:17-18
and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:24
Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. 1 John 4:17
You have become a holy temple for the Holy Spirit to live. When you sin in your actions, your spirit does not take part. Your spirit (the real you) is sealed by the Holy Spirit and sin cannot contaminate the real you. The flesh has been cut away from the real you.
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, Ephesians 1:13
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 1 Corinthians 6:19
You never have to worry about the Holy Spirit coming and going from you. He has made His permanent home with you. You are forever the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Being a temple of the Holy Spirit means that the Holy Spirit has found His home in you. He is forever faithful to you and closer than a brother. In fact, He has become one spirit with you!
But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 1 Corinthians 6:17
The Holy Spirit Will Never Leave You
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, and He has promised to never leave you or forsake you.
For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you. Hebrews 13:5
When Jesus was telling His disciples about the Holy Spirit whom He would send after His ascension to the Father, He said that the Holy Spirit would remain with them forever. Jesus is not a liar.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— John 14:16
The Holy Spirit is your forever companion. He will never, ever leave you for any reason. It is impossible for God to lie.
… in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began Titus 1:2
What Does the Holy Spirit Do in Our Lives?
The Holy Spirit comes to live inside a person when they receive salvation. There is a separate experience, called the baptism of the Holy Spirit where a believer receives power to be a witness of Jesus Christ on this earth. You can read more about that in my article Holy Spirit: God’s Gift to You.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God, one of the three Persons of the Godhead (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit). The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Counselor, Teacher, and Advocate.
The Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus. He is constantly convicting the world of their unbelief in Jesus Christ, in order to bring them to salvation. After salvation, He is convincing the believer of their righteousness in Christ and reminding them that the devil has been defeated.
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. John 16:8-11
In John 14:16, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as our Comforter. To comfort means to give strength and hope to, to cheer; to ease the grief or trouble of, to console. Wow! Our biggest cheerleader is always with us.
The voice of the Holy Spirit is always encouraging us, building us up, giving us heavenly wisdom and reminding us who we are in Christ. Remember, God is love. The voice of the Holy Spirit always sounds like love, because He is love. What a gift!
The Holy Spirit makes intercession for you. Through the heavenly prayer language that comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit, we can allow the Holy Spirit to pray perfect prayers through us. What an incredible gift. When you don’t know what to pray, the Holy Spirit will make intercession for you.
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26
When you pray in tongues, you are actually allowing Holy Spirit to pray through you. And He will take hold together with you against the problem, and pray the perfect prayer through you. He may be praying for your future, or protecting you from danger. It is an incredible gift. We have literally been given the mind of Christ and the secret wisdom of God.
In my article, Why the Holy Spirit Will Never Take Control of You, we look in more depth at what the Holy Spirit does in our lives. It’s worth the read.
What Does it Mean to Sin Against the Holy Spirit?
I have heard of many Christians being tormented by the thoughts of sinning against the Holy Spirit. Have you sinned against the Holy Spirit? Isn’t this the one sin God won’t forgive? Let’s look at what the Bible says. This concept comes from Jesus’s own words.
“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. Matthew 12:31-32
What was Jesus talking about here? In the context, He was talking to the Pharisees who accused Him of getting His power from the devil. They were accusing Him of being partnered with the Kingdom of darkness and completely rejecting the truth that He was the Son of God.
Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.” Matthew 12:24
What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? Blasphemy is railing or evil speaking. The Holy Spirit is always testifying of Jesus being Lord. Holy Spirit is constantly convicting the world of not believing on Jesus for salvation. Therefore, to blaspheme or speak against the Holy Spirit is to reject His witness of Jesus as Lord. These Pharisees were outright rejecting the witness of the Holy Spirit, who testifies of Jesus.
Someone who constantly rejects and speaks against the Holy Spirit’s witness of Jesus cannot receive forgiveness, because Jesus is the final sacrifice for sin- the only way to receive forgiveness and enter into relationship with the Father.
Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6
If you are a new creation in Christ, it is impossible for you to commit blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. You have already accepted His witness, and received Jesus as who He is- the Son of God.
