Why is the Bible Important?

why is the bible important

Why is the Bible important? Is it just a book or something more? Why is it important for a Christian to read their Bible? Is the Bible relevant for today? These are very important questions and it’s important that you resolve them in your heart.

The Bible is important because it is the inspired Word of God. The Bible reveals how humanity can have a relationship with the Creator, how humanity began, Who created humanity, and who we are. Every answer you need can be found in the Bible.

Understanding why the Bible is so important has radically changed my life. Many years ago I made a decision that I would never back off of the Word of God. That decision has been the key that has unlocked a world of treasure for me and given me countless victories. The Bible is much more than a book. It is alive and active and will absolutely transform your life for the better.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Why is the Bible Still Important Today?

The Bible is the inspired Word of God. A true revelation of what the Bible is and why it is so important is the most important element to living a victorious life as a Christian.

The Bible is eternal. It is just as important today as the day it was written. It is not only our handbook for life, but the very seed by which we are spiritually reborn and become a new creation in Christ.

having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, 1 Peter 1:23

Without the word of God, you couldn’t be born again and receive salvation. It is so important that you know without a doubt that the Bible is indeed the words of Almighty God.

The way you view the Bible will determine how you relate to God and how you interact with the world around you. If the enemy can get you to doubt the integrity of the word of God, your entire foundation as a Christian is shaky and you can easily be deceived.

I have seen so many people that started off strong in their walk with the Lord and eventually fell away. In every circumstance, it started with the falling away from the written word of God. The enemy got them to doubt the Word of God and its integrity. The enemy was subtle and sneaky and came after the Word of God in their heart (Mark 4:17).

Make a decision today that you will never back off the Word of God. I assure you, it is one of the best decisions you will ever make and will lead to a life of victory and freedom.

The Bible is not written by people just telling their opinions about God, but it is God directly communicating to us. He supernaturally gave men the words to write. The Word itself tells us that the words contained in it are given by inspiration of God.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God… 2 Timothy 3:16

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.  2 Peter 1:20-21

There are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of prophecies in the Old Testament that have already been fulfilled. Not only have they been fulfilled, but so perfectly down to the very last detail.

There are thousands of ancient manuscripts of the Bible that have been found. The differences between the ancient manuscripts and the Bible we have today are so incredibly insignificant that it leaves no question that the Bible is indeed God-breathed.

If you need more convincing of the integrity of the Bible, there are many faithful men and women who have spent their entire lives devoted to apologetics- proving intellectually the integrity of the Bible. I encourage you to look into this if needed because this is something that you need to be absolutely certain of.

Knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that God’s Word is accurate, true, and written by God is absolutely crucial for your faith and life as a Christian. This must be your assurance and solid foundation in your relationship with God.

The Purpose of the Bible is to Reveal Jesus

The whole point of both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible is to point to the Living Word, Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. The Holy Spirit will reveal Jesus to you as you read the Bible. This is the whole point of the Bible- to see Jesus and know Him. Jesus is the Word made flesh.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

Everything in the Old Testament points to the coming Messiah. The New Testament reveals Him as Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Discovering Jesus in the Bible is so exciting. As you see Him, you are transformed into the same image.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18

Why is the Bible the Most Important Source of Authority?

The Bible is the moral standard for right and wrong. Unfortunately, much of the world today has moved away from a belief that there is one absolute truth and instead embraced relativism. Relativism is the belief that knowledge, truth, and morality exist in relation to culture, society, or historical context, and are not absolute. This is totally false. There is an absolute truth.

Even people who call themselves Christians believe that people can have their own truths and that there are no absolutes. Despite what our society embraces, there are things we can be absolutely certain about and truths that we can build our life upon.

God’s Word is Him speaking to us and giving us the standard of what’s right and wrong. This is a hard pill to swallow for some, but it is so necessary that we humble ourselves and agree with what God says is right and wrong, good and evil.

Morality is based on the Word of God. When we stray from the morality outlined in the Bible, we move into deception and things become out of order.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

What is the Purpose of Bible Study?

The purpose of Bible study is to renew our minds to the truth. The truth about who God is, what He has done,  and who we are. Reading, studying, and meditating on the Bible is how we renew our minds to the truth. We must learn to think in agreement with God; and the Bible is our main way of doing this.

The truth about the nature of God, what the finished work of Jesus is, what has been provided for us, and who we are now as new creations in Christ is all revealed in the word of God. These truths will overwhelmingly transform your life as you discover them. The book of Romans tells us that this transformation happens by the renewing of our minds.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

How you think in your mind determines how you speak, how you feel, and how you behave. It all starts with your thoughts. Your feelings, behaviors, and actions all flow from your thought life. All the issues of life come out of your heart.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. Proverbs 23:7

Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23

Everything you could ever possibly need for this life has been given to you in your born again spirit. Nothing is left unaccomplished. Jesus’s work on the cross was indeed a finished work. However, you will not experience the things freely given to you without reprogramming your mind to think according to the truth.

as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 2 Peter 1:3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, Ephesians 1:3

Your soul (your mind, will and emotions) is like the filter that allows what’s true in your born again spirit to manifest in your physical existence.

For example, in your spirit, you are totally healed and made whole. In order to see this reality manifest in your physical body, you must renew your mind to this truth. This is why the Bible is so important.

In Ephesians 1, Paul prayed for the believers that he was writing to. How did he pray for them? He prayed that their spiritual eyes would be opened to see what they already have

Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power… Ephesians 1:15-19

After you are born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit, the rest of the Christian life is the beautiful journey of getting to know Jesus and what His finished work has already accomplished for you! It is the wonderful discovery of Christ in you.

You do this by renewing your mind to the Word of God, or learning to think in agreement with it. Your mind is like the software on a computer. You must reprogram your software to operate in agreement to the truth.

The Bible Is The Sword Of The Spirit

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; Ephesians 6:17

The Word of God is likened to the sword of the spirit in Ephesians. When you speak it out loud, it is your offensive weapon against the curse and the enemy that are operating in this fallen world. The curse brings bondage, sickness, poverty, anxiety, and many other destructive things. BUT, Christ has redeemed you from the curse of the law.

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), Galatians 3:13

You are no longer under the curse! The enemy has no more right to bring destruction into your life. This reality must be enforced in your life by the words of your mouth. When you speak the Word of God out loud, it becomes the sword of the spirit- a sword in the spirit realm, slicing through the things that come against you and enforcing the will of God in your life. The Word of God spoken is extremely powerful.

Jesus Himself used the written Word of God as the sword of the spirit when the devil came against Him in the wilderness (Matthew 4). Every time the devil tempted Him, Jesus responded with “It is written…”. If the Son of God used the written word as His sword and defense against the enemy, how much more should we!

The Bible Contains The Seeds for Everything You Need

The Word of God is absolutely precious to me and I’ll tell you why. It is full of the promises of God to you. The book of 2 Corinthians tells us that every promise in the Bible is for you, and God has already said yes.

For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. 2 Corinthians 1:20

Did you catch that? Every promise found in the Word of God is yes and amen to you! That’s really good news! We don’t have to wonder whether or not God will answer a prayer that He’s already said yes to.

Many people want a harvest of good things in their life, so they beg and wish and hope, but they never actually plant the seed for what they want. In Mark 4, Jesus explains that the Word of God is like a seed. When it is planted in your heart, it will begin to sprout and grow. What does it produce? It produces what it says. But you must plant the Word in your heart like a seed!

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Luke 8:11

For example, when the doctors told me that my child was at risk for certain problems, I found where the Word of God says that my children shall be whole and healthy (Isaiah 54:13). This promise is for my children and for your children. I took hold of that promise and declared it over my child. My child is perfectly healthy today.

When symptoms of sickness come against your body, plant the seeds of health from the Word of God in your heart. When anxiety or distress are afflicting you, plant the seeds of peace. Anything you could possibly need in this life is covered in the Word of God. You are never without hope.

He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. Psalm 107:20

When my husband and I were believing to get pregnant, I found the promise in the Bible that says I am a fruitful vine and my children would sit around my table (Psalm 128:3). I took this promise and planted it in my heart by reading it and believing it. I spoke it out loud all the time to water the seed in my heart. Sure enough, this seed from God’s Word produced what it said it would produce. I shared this whole story in Prayer Can Help You Get Pregnant: Here’s How it Works.

For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10-11

Why can you believe that every promise is for you? Because Jesus has obtained them for you. He took your sin and gave you His righteousness in exchange. This is the magnificent grace of God. You don’t have to deserve or earn the promises. They are yours because of what Jesus has done. This is amazing grace!
